Borgos Pieper participated in the international competition for a national science and innovation centre in Lithuania´s second city, Kaunas. Home to eight universities and long standing scientific community the 12,000m2 centre was designed within a river island park setting. Our proposal partly buried the scheme in order to integrate the large scale spaces at reception and back-of-house level and rose to allow views of the surrounding park and river valley. A dramatic viewing platform at the top-most level offered a panoramic set of views and dynamic exhibition space that emerged from the internal helical exhibition spaces. An intelligent building envelope and geothermal heat source reduced energy demand in the scheme making the project carbon neutral from the outset.
