Celebration of heritage through sensitive renewal

Appointed after a competitive interview the proposal sensitively upgrades the public spaces in and around the historic market building designed by Francisco Mora in 1916.

Our proposal to open the ground slab with a new tiered atrium offers a generous terrace and natural light source has become the focus of the public space. Reinstating the skylight allowed the sunlight to travel through the space throughout the day, adding a sparkle to the heart of the previously dark building.

The intervention has revitalised this historic building by introducing discrete new enclosures at ground level and four new levels of commercial accommodation and parking beneath the monument. Elegant landscaping, glass and local limestone create an ordered and delicate backdrop within the art nouveau structure. Our work extended to the fit-out and street furniture throughout the building.

The project was awarded a Gold Medal by the American Institute of Architects in the category of Interior and Restoration Design at the Miami Bienal for Architecture in December 2003.
